Junior Grand Prix

25th February 2010

If the standard of running in this month’s junior grand prix is anything to go by, the future of middle distance running in the Poly is assured.

Despite yet another evening of poor weather for the race the young people did not disappoint and there were many personal best times achieved.

First to finish on the evening was 12 year old Lewis Price. Lewis was running his first grand prix but is a regular member of our under 13 boys’ cross country team, currently lying in 6th position in this winter’s North East Harrier league.

A storming run by 9 year old Indion Chhina saw her decimate her previous best time for the 1.25 mile course to finish in 2nd place, closely followed by 14 year old Craig Whitfield, who also knocked over a minute from his previous best time.

Fastest runner of the evening was 15 year old Mitchell Renney, who lowered the course record, previously held by Anthony Wallett, by 20 seconds. Not to be outdone by the boys, 14 year old Vicki Tanner also reduced the girls fastest time, previously held by Anthony’s 15 year old sister Gemma Wallett, by 12 seconds.

Vicki Tanner now leads the grand prix, on 30 points with only one more race to go.  In second place overall is 12 year old William Robson with 36 points. However only one point behind William are sisters 11year old Angel Chinna, the previous leader, and 13 year old Ebony Beverley. It is certainly shaping up to be an interesting finale for the next race on 25th March.

Fastest times on the night were:

Boys

1st   Mitchell Renney   6mins 42secs

2nd Ryan Brooke 6mins 50secs

3rd   Jonathon Chisholm  6mins 51 secs

Girls

2nd   Ebony Beverley 8mins 59 secs
